Mexican school at the end of the 18th century, entourage of José de Paez (1720-1790) At the apothecary's Oil on copper, bears an inscription at the bottom right: N 3 De Castiso, Y Espanola, Espanola Painting of castes, the legend in the cartouche indicating a number corresponds to a known series of caste tables preserved in Mexico City which specifies a classification of these mixtures. The indications specify the ethnic origin of the parents and the child. Castiso means here in Spanish "quarteron".
