"Châtelaine Scissor Keyboard, Gloved Hand, Sterling Silver, Provence, Circa 1850."
Silver keyboard decorated with a gloved hand holding a laurel wreath with its original hook, silver hallmark (Minerva) and monograms on the back "C R". Length: 7.5cm Weight: 17.2 gr Minerva punch Scissor hooks are called keyboards (lou clavié) in Provence. The hooks are formed of a metal blade more or less decorated and often engraved and pierced, curved with a spatula-shaped part intended to hang on the inside of the skirt. We hang a pair of scissors there, usually at the end of two chains. Throughout the southern half of France, most hooks between 1815 and 1880 were made in Niort, a very important hook-making center in the 19th century.
