""martyr Of An Unidentified Saint", Oil On Copper, Italy, Circa 1580."
Oil on copper representing the martyr of an unidentified saint (the angels flying over the scene and bringing him the palm and the crown of the martyrs, not bearing specific attributes allowing him to be identified). Men-at-arms, two of whom have taken off their armor that can be seen at the bottom left, seem to kill the saint, their hands tied to the pole. One instantly thinks of the martyrdom of Saint Sebastian, finished with punches, the arrows having no effect, but there are no traces of wounds left by the latter. The audience observes the scene passively, and the character sitting in the 1st row, on the edge of a sort of vault, casually turns his head towards the spectator. Northern Italy, end of the 16th century. Dimensions with old natural wood frame: 73x63 This work can form a pair with the "Adoration of a holy martyr to the Virgin and Child" presented to the gallery and visible on the site. wear, oxidation, restorations.
