Born in Rouen in 1883 from a father in ironwork and a mother seamstress, Raymond Quibel is a recognized artist of the Rouen school. A regular at the museum, which he frequented with his family from an early age, he showed an interest in drawing very early on.

From the 1900s, he exhibited in the galleries of his hometown and became a member of the Society of Rouen Artists created in 1906, thus participating in the rebirth of a Norman art center. Between 1918 and 1928, the Georges Petit Gallery devoted four monographic exhibitions to him where his work was hailed by critics who praised a learned “balance of plans”.

Painter of landscapes, Raymond Quibel will remain faithful to the pleinairism dear to the impressionist artists of the past generation. Sensitive to the charm of the hazy atmosphere of his hometown, he expresses its effects through delicate shades of gray and mauves. From 1936 he exhibited several times series of “very young” representing the four seasons. The winter landscape that we propose, executed from the quays of the Seine in Rouen, offers a bird's eye view of the Lacroix island that he has depicted many times.. The artist observes the river and its surroundings, populated by factories in all weathers. His views of the Rouen hillsides, both precise and synthetic, earned him some success and proved particularly popular with collectors of his time.

Besides painting and illustrations, Raymond Quibel successfully tackles the design of furniture and decorations. In this capacity, he collaborates in particular with the National Manufactures of Sèvres and Beauvais as well as with the Compagnie Générale Transatlantique. In 1934, he designed the models for the tapestries of the armchairs in the dining room of the first class of the liner Normandie as well as the designs for the decorative panels.
