Object description :

"Taoist God Lu XIng And His Assistant, Vertical Roll, Polychrome Painting, Gilding, China. Asia"
Chinese painting on polychrome vertical roller representing the Taoist god Lu and his young assistant. The rich polychromy is made with ink and coloured pigments on paper.

This Chinese painting dates from the end of the Ching Dynasty (late nineteenth or early twentieth century) and was rentoilée. The work of rentoilage which is of quality was carried out by the previous owner in the 1980s (provenance Chinese collection of M. Chan HK.)

The scene depicts the Taoist god Lu Xing, also called «star of prosperity». It refers to the notion of abundance, and is recognizable by its winged cap. His garment is indeed the color of his attributes: red for joy and green for emoluments, reference to his name (green is called «Lu»). Lu also means «Mandarin fees», the notions of honour and profit being inseparable. It thus symbolizes both official honours and officials.
Together with Fu Xing and Shou Xing, Lu Xing represents the Taoist trinity of the «Stars of Happiness».
