"Jacob Adriaensz Bellevois (1621-1676). Dutch Ships In Front Of The City Dordrecht"
Oil on oak panel, two joined boards Presented in a Dutch-style blackened wood frame Total dimensions: 60 x 70 cm - The panel alone: 40.5 x 52.5 cm Jacob Adriaensz Bellevois, was born between 1620 and 1622 in Rotterdam and he was buried on September 19, 1676 in the same city. Little information has been gathered so far on this painter of the Dutch Golden Age, specialist in seascapes. He would have been trained with Simon de Vlieger or Julius Porcellis. Married for the first time in Rotterdam in 1643, he remarried in 1656 with a girl from Gouda after the death of his first wife. He was present in Rotterdam until 1663 when he painted most of his seascapes, he planted his easel on the edge of the shore where the city of Dordrecht is visible in the distance, very recognizable by its cathedral. He left for Gouda, the couple settled there from 1666 to 1671, and then to Hamburg in 1672, probably forced to flee the advancing French troops; there he meets the painter Johannes Voorhout. “Holland, this country where the sea is everywhere, what landscapes are more striking than this intense port activity rocked by the light of the north. It is quite natural that painters direct their gaze towards the coast, the economic and social heart of a country which has dearly acquired its freedom and is proud of its economic success. The Dutch, in the long liberation war which opposed them to the kingdom of Spain, also won several naval victories which are exalted in the painting and greatly contribute to the diffusion of the navies. Bellevois shows great qualities of observation that apply both to the landscape and to the scenes of life described in his paintings and to the representations he draws up of ships. Provenance: Private Swiss collection. Acquired on the European art market in the 60s and in the same family until today. Several large European museums have paintings: Amsterdam; Stormy sea with squadron near a rocky coast. The Hague ; By a river with slightly rough seas and ships. Hamburg; Weber Collection, Salute from a Turkish frigate in front of Amsterdam. Madrid; Turkish ship in a Dutch port. Rotterdam; Mouth of a river with ships in front of the city Dordrecht.
