"Louis XVI Period Portable System Table"
Exceptional small portable unit serving both as a dressing table and writing table. Made of mahogany wood, it has 4 fluted re-entrant angles and rests on 4 bronze lion feet. The tray is equipped with a gray veined marble plate (34 X 22.5 cm) and two open side receptacles to store utensils such as brushes, toiletries but also letter paper, feathers etc. Four brass rods with a split heart motif decorate the base of each side panel. Two drawers in each width, interior mounted in oak panels, they each have a lock including a working key. A sliding zipper lengthwise in the upper part reveals a removable panel (28 X 18.5 cm) on both sides. One side covered with brown leather and serving as a writing desk when positioned horizontally. The other side with a mirror and serving as a vanity mirror (22 X 13 cm) when it is positioned vertically. The whole in very good condition has not undergone any restoration or modification. Note: this rare small piece of furniture, worthy of a museum, remains an important witness on the theme of the toilet in the 18th century.
