He enrolled at the School of Fine Arts in Angers, then at those in Paris in the workshop of Jean-Léon Gérôme in 1886. After a long friendship with Renoir, he settled in Cagnes-sur-Mer and made no secret of the influence of his work. His light-flooded forms nevertheless retain a certain respect for classicism; his ambition is to blend the rigour of Ingres with the impressionist fade.
