This painting Two dogs at rest is characteristic of the work of Zacharie Noterman. Born around 1820 in Ghent (Belgium), died in January 1890 in Paris, this Belgian painter and printmaker specializes in painting scenes of monkeys performing human activities, as well as in paintings of dogs.

Son of a painter and decorator, he was trained by his older brother Emmanuel Noterman, then continued his studies at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Antwerp. His works can be seen at the Museum of Art and History of Cognac, at the Museum of Fine Arts in Dunkirk, at the Petit-Palais in Paris among others.
This painting represents two dogs standing out from a wild nature in a shade of brown and a grayish blue in the background giving an impression of the sea. Very present in the center of the canvas and occupying the space with force, they pass by their different attitude, a very distinct feeling. Both at rest, the black dog on the left, sitting on its two hind legs, gazes into ours with its large eyes full of tenderness, while the other dog, white , tired, lies down long enough to occupy the right of the painting.
This painting is monogrammed in the lower middle.
Very good state. Golden frame with some small tasks, slight gaps.
Dimensions without frame: L 32.5 cm / H 24.5 cm Dimensions with frame: L 41.5 cm / H 33.5 cm
