On a desk are placed all the instruments of a navigator preparing for a trip: a magnifying glass, a terrestrial globe, a compass, maps, a telescope, etc.
Beautiful composition typical of still lifes by Charles Cerny, the essence of which revolves around travel and the Navy.
Very good condition, in its original carved wood frame.

Charles Cerny (1892-1865) learned engraving and started in this art at the age of 17. He won a painting competition in 1911 and was urged by F.A. Subert, member of the Academy of Arts and Letters, and F.X. Harlas painter and art critic, to study painting.He left for training in Vienna and Munich. Then he came to Paris in 1913 and frequented artistic circles, sponsored by Antoine Bourdelle, and participated for the first time in the Salon des Indépendants in March 1914.
He enlisted as a volunteer in the foreign legion and saw the First World War in Morocco.
He married in 1916, while on leave, with a Frenchwoman, Marie (Mado) Bassinghi.
After the war, he resumed his studies at the Julian Academy while exercising various professions to earn a living (musician, engraver, illustrator, translator, ...). He participated in many salons, in particular the salons of the independents (for example in 1932 and 1943 in France and abroad, and he began to have some success.
He was appointed official painter of the Navy in 1952, which allowed him to sail on the Dixmude and the Georges Leygues.
He excels in portraits, still lifes (especially marine) and landscapes inspired by his travels (Morocco, Netherlands, Italy ..).
