"Battle Of Jacques Courtois"Painting, oil on canvas, representing a battle, measuring 60 x 100 cm without frame and 75 x 115 cm with frame, by Jacques Courtois dit le Borgognone (Saint-Hyppolite 1621 - Rome 1676).
This awe-inspiring battle scene in terms of size and pictorial quality is to be counted among the artist's masterpieces and exhibits the peculiar stylistic features of the Baroque era, including the dynamic development of the narrative and bloody realism. .
The scenography with the fifth of the knights in the foreground is specific to the French master, as well as the jagged line of the horizon and the wide sky furrowed by clouds and clots of smoke released by the artillery, which confuse the profile of the mountains and forts. This painting carried out with a remarkable expressive force recalls the excitement of the melee of his best works made for the Medici family, moreover here we can see how a more peremptory colourist vivacity emerges which makes the painting even more pleasant and beautiful.
