"falstaff "oil On Canvas, English School, 19th C. flag

Object description :

""falstaff "oil On Canvas, English School, 19th C."
Rather comical genre scene taking place in an English neo-Gothic house. A bearded man, rather plump, dressed in the style of the 16C, pays court to a quality lady richly dressed and wearing a beaded, crested hat. She seems to ignore the advances of her sighing, looking at the viewer, and sketching a smile. In the background, on the right, we see a page running up, looking distraught, no doubt to warn of a danger: the imminent arrival of the husband? Many details in the background, including the painting above the characters. Undoubtedly English school of the 1st half of the 19th century. Modern setting
