Object description :

"Haloed Buddha Standing. Grey Schist. Art Of Gandhara, Ancient Greco-buddhist Sculpture. Asia Statue"
Statue of Buddha represented standing, in very high relief and grey schist, on a base with square section.

The character is easily identifiable because, unlike the Bodhisattva, he wears no adornment and presents the ushnisha, a divine cranial protuberance that is a distinctive sign and not a simple bun. It appears haloed and the pedestal is decorated in front of two stylised flowers.
Both hands are missing but the position of the arms suggests that he was in abhaya-mûdra, the gesture of the absence of fear, which also corresponds to the character depicted.

This sculpture shows a certain interest since it illustrates a syncretic culture, around a Buddhism specific to Asia, but whose forms are clearly influenced by the Western cultural boom allowed earlier by Alexander the Great. Thus, we find the blue grey schist typical of this region of present-day Pakistan, material used in the Greco-Buddhist era. The aquiline nose and the wet drape characteristic of the representations usually reserved to the Greek statuary respect here the canons of Gandharian art.

Single height: 19.29 inches
With base: 21.65 inches
