Jean VERVISCH (Brussels 1896-1977), post-expressionist painter and designer. Student at the Academy of Saint-Josse-ten-Noode (Brussels) with the Symbolist painter Henri Ottevaere. Stayed in Paris in 1931. Then traveled to North Africa and Italy. His work, which testifies to an innate taste for matter and contrasts of light, mixes sensuality and mysticism. Living for thirty years in Ostend, on the Belgian coast, he frequents Ensor and Spilliaert. He is also the friend of the Belgian painters Brusselmans and Tytgat. Works in many Belgian museums and collections.
