Universal exhibition in Paris in 1889
"Le palais des Industries" is designed by Joseph Bouvard. At its center, the Grand Central Dome is, during the Exposition, the first building to use electricity on a large scale; the fountain in front of him, the work of Jules Coutan, has a set of electric lights that change color to the sound of music played by a military band.
The Eiffel Tower is what remains most visible of this Exhibition. The tower, 312 meters high, is Gustave Eiffel's response to the competition organized by the Ministry of Industry and Commerce to celebrate the centenary of the French Revolution and the progress of science and technology made in France since 1789. A list of seventy-two names of scholars is inscribed on the outside of the first floor of the tower.
