About ... MURANO
This tiny Venetian island has been producing glass for over eight centuries. The creations of extreme refinement reached their peak from the 16th century. The prestigious workshops - Ballarin, Barovier & Toso, Seguso, Venini… - are still present. Designers and ceramists collaborate with master glassmakers to create authentic works of art. The Glass Museum at Palazzo Giustiniani houses no less than 4000 pieces from antiquity to the present day. The "sommerso" technique (immersed in Italian) invented by Flavio Poli in the 1950s, consists of superimposing layers of glass by passing the object successively through different melting glass crucibles, allowing subtle combinations of colors.
