Pupil of David in Paris first, then in Brussels where he accompanied his master in exile, François-Joseph Navez (Charleroi 1787 - Brussels 1869) was one of his most interesting late followers. He closely shared the master's ultimate concerns, before leaving for Rome, thanks to a grant which enabled him to reunite with his former Parisian classmates and to share the training of the residents of the Villa Medici. The meeting with Ingres and the discovery of the Nazarenes shifted his art towards the search for a synthesis between Davidism and the innovative currents that had arisen since the Restoration. With Victor Schnetz and Léopold Robert, he also attached himself to the evocation of a popular and gracious Italy, and thus participated in the birth of a current of sensitivity which was to cross the entire century. Renowned portrait painter, much appreciated by the Belgian upper middle class, he nevertheless tried on his return to Brussels in 1822 to establish himself in the "great genre", especially in religious painting and was among the initiators of renewal in this field.
