Flirey - Albert Fossard - Late Impressionist - Memorial The Great War 1914 1918 Verdun

Watercolor signed A Fossard representing a view of the church of Flirey, dedicated to Saint-Etienne, built in 1850 according to the plans of Messrs VIVENOT and PARISOT, architects from Nancy. The steeple of more recent construction (1877), was located at the entrance, according to a project by Mr. FISSON, architect in Nancy. The ruins of the church were preserved after the bombardments but their condition deteriorated during the end of the 20th century. Watercolor dated February 1917 is 3 years after the battle of Flirey which took place from September 19 to October 11, 1914. This battle saw the victory of the German imperial army over the French forces. The capture of Flirey will have a considerable influence on the course of the conflict, cutting off most of the roads and railways to Verdun. It mainly opposed on one side the 3rd French Army to the 6th German Army within the framework of the race to the sea. This watercolor constitutes a historical document, treated in a late impressionist style. The frame is original (49x42.5), some imperfections. The watercolor framed by the mat measures 28.5x22.
