"Adolphe Monticelli (1824-1886) Rendez-vous Sur La Terrasse"
Superb oil on panel by Provencal master Adolphe Monticelli (1824-1886). The work features characters, children and a dog; It is signed lower right and appeared in a retrospective exhibition of the artist at La Ciotat in 1991 under the title: "Le Rendez-vous sur la Terrasse". It measures 58 cm by 66 in its pretty golden frame and 38 cm by 46 without the frame.Vincent van Gogh was inspired by Monticelli, whom he never met since the latter died in 1886 a few months before van Gogh arrived in Paris. He studied Monticelli's technique and experimented with this colorful and particularly expressive painting for certain works, as evidenced by his vases and bouquets and his search for a thick touch. "Monticelli sometimes took a bouquet of flowers as a motif to bring together on a single panel the whole range of his richest and best balanced tones," Vincent wrote to his brother Theo in March 1888.
