Student of Louis Martinet, he chooses his themes in everyday peasant life, the mills, the courts inns, fairs and markets: familiar, lively scenes bathed in a pretty light in the tradition of Flemish painting. He exhibited at the salon from 1848, then every year regularly, from 1861 to 1891.
