Object description :

"Afchar Persian Carpet Around 1880"
Beautiful 19th century Afchar carpet. Afchar or AFSHARS carpet
A former nomadic Turkish-speaking population that lives partly in southern Iran and transhumance in the summer to mountain pastures south and west of Kirman. These weavers produced excellent carpets as well as kilims which were sold in Shahr-e Babak, Saidadad and the surrounding area. Nomadic art completely disappeared today. Carpet that still has its original kilim finish. Very good condition for a 19th century carpet. The vast majority of AFSHARS live in northern Iran to the east of the Confederation territories. They are now all settled. The Afshar carpet of the 19th century has woollen warps and it was not until the 1930s that the weavers used cotton as a structure. Traditional patterns sometimes provide important clues to the history of a tribe or its contacts with other groups, but this requires careful examination.
The origin of the Afshar carpet is confirmed by the presence of an ivory warp and a red-orange weft.
