Henri Durand Brager (France 1814 - Cairo 1879) Dimensions without frame: 40 x 25.5 cm Dimensions including frame: 68 x 52 cm Durand-Brager made many trips to Europe, Algeria, along the Atlantic coasts of the Africa before entering Eugène Isabey's studio. In 1840, he was part of the expedition responsible for bringing back Napoleon's ashes. Returned to France, he painted many pictures of naval battles (fight of the frigate Niemen against the frigates Aréthusa and Amethyst 1843), some of which were ordered by the French government (Bombardment of Mogador, naval combat in front of the Moroccan coast 1845). During the Crimean War (1853-1855), he attended the siege of Sébastopol, then he participated in an expedition to the Black Sea and at the end of the conflict, he painted a Battle of Sinope at the request of the Tsar of Russia. If the naval battles (Bombardment of Shimonoseki 1869) and the navies still constitute an important part of his work, he also paints having for subject the landscapes of the East.
