René de Pauw Signature in the middle on the left Dimensions without frame: 73 cm W x 93 cm H Dimensions including frame: 81 cm W x 101 cm H René de Pauw (Pittem-Tielt 1887 - Brussels 1946) Painter, watercolourist and draftsman of landscapes, genre scenes, flowers, portraits, nudes and fishermen. Illustrator of many books. Settled in Bruges around 1900. Pupil at the Academy of Bruges (1912-13, F. Van Acker). Settled in Brussels after GM I. Spends his holidays in Heist and Zeebrugge from 1920. Stayed in Heist between 1938 and 1943, before settling in Uccle. At the beginning his painting is clear and impressionistic. From 1930, a year that marked a turning point in his career, he drew his inspiration from the world of fishermen, which he represented in an expressionist, dark and monumental style. Also carries out murals (Bruges station, Naval School in Antwerp). Retrospective in Bruges in 1960. Works acquired by the State and from the Museums of Antwerp and Bruges.
