Object description :

"Pastoral Early 19th Century"
Charming gouache dated 1817, Louis XVI style. Classic subject of the romantic era which features a charming shepherd playing the mandolin to a couple of lovers sitting at the foot of a rock. Everything is there: the peaceful sheep, the faithful dog at his master's foot, an imaginary country setting in front of a cloudy sky ... This work is signed lower right in black gouache: Prosper Renaux and dated 1817. I present to you this painting in the state of discovery which can delight lovers of this type of subject; look at the pictures, feel free to ask me for other detail pictures. Mat in blue gouache paper and black lines with a line puller (traces of wetness). Protective glass. Golden baguette frame from the early 19th century (scattered chips, visible insect bites). Traces of freckles in the painting mainly in the sky. A Prosper Renaux exists, he was born in 1793 and died in 1852. Architect, he worked in the departments of Gard and Vaucluse. He worked in particular on the restoration of the Roman arch of Orange, member of the French society of archeology and architect attached to the commission of historical monuments. He worked at Avignon Cathedral before 1848. However, all this information is to be taken as a condition for the attribution of this work. Note: the shades of gray technique is here rather well treated. The faces are delicate, the shadows and lights interesting, especially in the folds of the clothes.
