The large landscape proposed illustrates a glimpse of a luxuriant Italian landscape, probably inspired by the Roman countryside, crossed by a stream with a small waterfall and embellished on the right by the imposing ruins of an ancient temple.
It is a work that reflects, for its composite structure and stylistic code, the compositions of the French landscape architect Pierre-Antoine Patel (1648-1707), also known as Patel the Younger, son of Pierre Patel, also a renowned landscape painter as well as his teacher who, like many French painters of his generation, was influenced by the Italian landscapes painted by Claude Lorrain or Gaspard Dughet.
The painting in question, with a beautiful scenic impact, is a fascinating example of his art: a real but idealized view, interpreted with Arcadian sensibility, where the gaze, fascinated by the ruins in the foreground, can then go deeper following the perspective sequence. cadenced of the arboreal wings.
Most of his works follow a recurring pattern: ancient ruins, bathed in sunlight, characterized by a color palette of warm and earthy hues. We can make a comparison with the 'Italian landscape with classical ruins and figures' (Christie's, New York June 2002: https://www.christies.com/lotfinder/lot/pierre-antoine-patel-ii-an-italianate -landscape-with-3923566 ...; the tree-lined spots executed with free and quick brushstroke, the warm and burnished colors, the atmospheric rendering of the rising of the mounds of clouds, all in a well-balanced composition of Arcadian taste, constitute the most significant elements of his painting, which we find well in the two compared canvases.
The painting is in excellent condition, accompanied by a pleasant golden frame.
