Diane In The Bath

Very beautiful gouache signed by Pierre Marcel Breyne (Lille 1887 - Cherbourg 1918), representing two huntresses from Antiquity by the water's edge, probably Diana in the bath with a following, accompanied by a greyhound.
Born March 16, 1887 in Lille, Marcel Breyne is the son of Pierre Breyne, lithographer of Belgian origin. A student of the painter Léon Hodebert (1852-1914), he also entered the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Lille and began to exhibit at the Salon des Artistes Français. But while he was only at the beginning of his artistic career, he was mobilized during the First World War as a second lieutenant in the 33rd Infantry Regiment. Marcel Breyne died for France at the maritime hospital in Cherbourg on April 9, 1918, following a serious illness contracted on the front. Decorated with the Croix de Guerre. He is buried in the monumental cemetery of Rouen.
