Madou Jean-Baptiste born in 1796 in Brussels - died in 1877 in Saint-Josse-ten-Node.
Painter of genre scenes; also Belgian designer, lithographer and etcher. PJC François student at the Brussels Academy. From 1814 to 1818, he worked as a clerk in the finance department, then, until 1820, as a designer-topographer in the war department.
Noticed by the publisher Jobard who invited him to his studio as a typographer, he anonymously produced plans, illustrations for books, vignettes and portraits. It was not until around 1830 that a series of lithographs appeared in Brussels and Paris under his name. In 1836, he obtained a gold medal at the Brussels Salon with the publication of "The physiognomy of society in Europe from 1400 to the present day". He shows there a taste for historical restitution which one finds in "The life of the painters of the Flemish and Dutch school" (1842).
Madou exhibited for the first time a painting at the Salon de Bruxelles in 1842. As in many of his earlier engravings, in his paintings he dealt with genre scenes, most often located in the 18th century: cabaret scenes, everyday and popular scenes, not without humor. sometimes Madou evokes the past in the tradition of Flemish and Dutch genre painting.
Exhibition at the Charlier Museum (Bruxelles), in 2012: Madou with an uncovered face.
