We present to you a unique work, both for the format of the extended visual angle, which allows us to savor this naturalistic panorama in an extremely realistic way, and for the theme represented, namely the baptism of Christ in the Jordan River by John the Baptist .
The work, which falls under the sixteenth-century Flemish mannerism, recalls, both for its compositional typology and for the details, the works of the Flemish Karel van Mander (1548 - 1606) one of the exponents of late Dutch mannerism. In his painting, in which he preferred biblical and mythological themes, the figures, stylized and of Italian taste, follow the taste dictates of the so-called Academy of Haarlem.
The result is a very sophisticated, elegant and cultured painting, destined for a collection that looked at classical culture and Roman art of Renaissance taste. Our work is the perfect example.
Going into the detail of the table, the narration of Baptism is however only a pretext that allowed our painter to create the setting of an idyllic scenario, where the characters seem to live in a dreamy and timeless atmosphere: the placid flow of the Jordan River it guides the gaze towards the depths of the landscape in which the architecture of the city of Jerusalem is recognized. The large spaces filled with a serene but luxuriant nature allow our painter to show his great landscape skills.
The river meanders between jagged banks, contained by green banks, dotted with undressed characters, women and men, concentrated to observe in the direction of the Savior and identifiable as the newbies destined for baptism. The bodies are exhibited with great naturalness, where nudity is intended as a symbol of virtue, truth and innocence, recalling the nudity of the progenitors when they inhabited earthly paradise, before original sin.
The painting is in excellent condition.
The painting, like all our objects, is sold with a certificate of photographic authenticity in accordance with the law (FIMA - CINOA)
