Born German but naturalized Swiss, Carlos Schwabe began his studies at the fine arts of Geneva before and then in Paris from 1884.
In addition to being recognized as a painter of religious compositions, allegorical subjects, genre scenes, nudes, portraits and landscape, Schwabe is also admired for his talents as a watercolourist, engraver, draftsman, illustrator and decorator.
In 1994, the Musée d'Orsay devoted the exhibition Symbolism and Naturalism to him: Carlos Schwabe illustrator of Zola's "dream".
