"Saint John The Baptist In A Landscape. XVIIIth Century Italian School"
Oil on wooden panel. Stylish frame in red tortoiseshell veneered with black rods. Dimensions with the frame: 55 x 44 cm Our small panel represents the young Saint-Jean Baptiste in a landscape, he is sitting on a rock holding his shepherd's crook in the shape of a cross with a phylactery coiled at its top, at his feet a lamb (related to the Mystic Lamb). The painter shows us here a young man with a drawn body, lightly covered with a sheepskin and a piece of red fabric. Her beautiful face with an emerging beard and her curly hair is imbued with a certain sensuality. With his right hand, he has just filled at the source which springs from the rock a cup of water, an allusion to baptism. Saint John is the patron of several cities: Turin, Genoa and Florence, for example. In Rome, the Basilica of Saint John Lateran is dedicated to him. Very good state of conservation.
