Oil on wooden panel representing a "woman at the water's edge" in a lively landscape. Scene in a wood on the background of a clearing animated by a character, representation much appreciated by the painter around 1860. Born August 2, 1807 in Bordeaux and died November 18, 1876 in Menton. Narcisse Diaz de la Pena became an orphan in Paris in 1817. In 1822, he became an apprentice painter at the Arsène Gillet porcelain factory. In 1837, he joined the Barbizon school group. Diaz admires Eugène Delacroix and he is fascinated by the Orient. He frequents Théodore Rousseau and Jean-François Millet. He paints by working the material which allows him to obtain light effects and in that he will influence the Impressionists. At the Salons he regularly receives awards and is considered to be a "charming colorist". It is this quality that Vincent van Gogh, his fervent admirer valued most in him.
