Hereke Silk Rug - Turkey Around 1950 flag

Object description :

"Hereke Silk Rug - Turkey Around 1950"
Carpet with floral decoration with wild animals, extra fine quality silk and silk weft. Western Turkey, around 1950. Hereke is a small town in Turkey on the shores of the Gulfs of Izmit. In 1844, when the Ottomans had to abandon Egypt, they transferred the large manufacturing trades from Cairo to Héréké. Héréké, closer to Istanbul, seemed the ideal place to continue the textile tradition specific to Cairo, namely superb carpets intended for the local aristocracy or for European ambassadors. In fact, a year earlier, in 1843, a very large silk spinning mill, the imperial silk factory, was inaugurated in Héréké. Right from the start, the Héréké carpets were considered to be prestigious pieces for their exceptional knotting finesse.
