Object description :

"Pewter Wine Pitcher (tin) - Paris, XVIII Th Century"
PITCHER with shoulder in pewter, plinth base, goblet in straight heel and S-shaped pusher with molded crest.
Unidentified maker's mark: CM monogram in a hexagonal cartouche.
Gauging countermark to the interior bottom: MD (to the measurement of Saint Denis).
Height: 26.5 cm.
PARIS, XVIII th century.

The gauging countermark, the typology of the part and its five-hinge hinge, clearly place it in Paris.
This maker's mark is not listed; four masters are candidates for the award of this hallmark: Claude MULOT received master in 1717, Claude MAGNY received master in 1725, Charles MAUCOMBLE cited in 1725 and Claude MUTINOT received master in 1725. It will therefore be necessary to wait for other findings to hope to conclude .
The cover has been replaced, repair very well done and practically undetectable.

Let us recall in passing that these jugs were wine measures under the Ancien Régime. The capacity of those who were used in inns, drinking places, etc., had to be periodically controlled by the royal or ecclesiastical power to assure "good measure" to the consumer, but in fact, this regulation was little applied and the pitchers which wear gauges are very rare. *
