Object description :

"Watercolor Franco Gentilini"
Franco Gentilini is an Italian artist (1909 - 1981). Very young he presented his work and participated in international events (XVII Venice Biennale 1930). In 1932 he moved to Rome. Immersed in the literary atmosphere of the famous Caffè Aragno, he met artists and writers such as Cagli, Mucci, Falqui, Sinisgalli, de Libero, with whom he began a long artistic collaboration (illustration of their texts and poems). The 1930s were marked by his participation in biennials and quadrennials where he won several prizes (2nd place in the Rubicon Prize 1933, First Rubicon Prize 1934). Gentilini goes from carrying out public orders to easel paintings (portraits, models). The artistic universe of Gentilini was formed in the context of Italian culture during and after the Second World War and a distance from Futurism. The artist developed his own technique made of a happy marriage between painting and drawing on a black background mixed with sand. His favorite motifs are his typical cathedrals (that of Monreale in Sicily), his baptisteries, his city walls, his jugglers, his landscapes with irregular perspectives, his street musicians. Gentilini is the artist of joie de vivre, even if this joy is overshadowed by the loss of a world devastated by war and the premonition of the birth of a mass society. Gentilini's painting, firmly anchored in popular tradition, rehabilitates the graphic values of painting. Since the mid-1950s, her female figures (inspired by actress Kim Novak) and her compositions have been transformed in the direction of geometric simplification, adopting an almost complete two-dimensionality due to the chromatic and rhythmic effects of color. In Italy, he is considered one of the great figurative painters of the 20th century. His works are sought after by collectors and exhibited in the largest museums and public collections in Italy, such as the Uffizi Gallery in Florence, the Vatican Museum, the Municipal Pinacotec of Faenza, the Center for Archives and Studies Communication in Parma, the National Gallery of Modern and Contemporary Art and the Montecitorio Palace in Rome. To celebrate the centenary of the artist's birth, retrospectives were held in various public places (Pericle Fazzini Museum in Assisi and the della Permanente Museum in Milan). Our watercolor enhanced with gouache is signed and dated 1962. It is presented with its quality framing and original coaster. Frame dimensions: 71 x 91 cm
