The Queen of Alexandria, Catherine, who lived according to legend in the third century, is depicted here in the best known episode that concerns her, her "mystical marriage", symbolized by the wedding ring that Christ Child is putting on her finger.
As a young woman of aristocratic rank, her status is testified to us by the sumptuous robes embellished with precious stones with which she is portrayed and by the magnificence of the jewels worn, including a crown that collects the hairstyle, a string of pearls that surrounds the pearly neck and pearl earrings.
Two small cherubs placed at the top, appearing from the beam of golden light, and three musicians who cheer the scene with their instruments attend the scene.
This fine painting, executed towards the end of the seventeenth century, reflects the stylistic features of the Neapolitan pictorial school: the colors are warm, the color range is soft, the brush strokes fast but precise;
Given the composition and the characters that outline the figures, the canvas should be placed in the thriving production of Luca Giordano's workshop. It shows, in particular, some stylistic traits that would make us inclined to attribute it to the hand of Giuseppe Simonelli (Naples 1650 - 1710), one of his most important students.
Chronologically the canvas dates back to the last decades of the seventeenth century, when Simonelli, by virtue of his talent, often assists Jordan with the power to intervene in his works, even practicing the finishing of the works already started by the master. This collaboration is not surprising at all knowing the procedures and running a Jordanian shop, but it should not be forgotten that the young man was one of the best and most promising students, who then had an independent career.
The canvas is in excellent condition. Complete with ancient frame.
