"San Sebastian - Atelier De Francesco Furini (1603-1646)"
Oil on canvas: 72 x 57 cm Presented in a rare Italian setting from the early 17th century with its original gilding and decorated with foliage on a plate. Total dimensions with the frame: 90 x 75 cm On our painting Saint Sebastian is represented as a handsome young man, his long hair hanging over his shoulders. According to tradition, it is attached to a tree trunk and its body is pierced with arrows. To accentuate the sensuality, the painter chose a tight framing and uses a powerful light which illuminates his bust laterally, we are in full current Baroque and still Caravagesque. Baroque Italian painter, Francesco Furini, born on April 10, 1603 in Florence in the same city he died on August 19, 1646, he became a priest in 1633. The work of Furini reflects the tension of the Florentine conservative mannerist style faced with the new Baroque style of the time. He painted biblical and mythological subjects using the sfumato technique, superimposition of delicate and blurred pictorial layers, like Vinci. Freedberg described Furini's style as filled with "morbid sensuality". His frequent use of undressed women is discordant with his excessive religious sentimentality, and his stylization and accomplished poses contradict his intention to express exacerbated emotions. His stylistic choices have not gone unnoticed by more Puritan contemporary biographers like Filippo Baldinucci. Robert Browning refuted Baldinucci's claim that Furini ordered on his deathbed that all of his nudes be destroyed. For Browning, the clothing of Furini's subjects symbolizes the courageous search for hidden truth. Modern research has further shown that in accessing the priesthood, Furini did not abandon his subjects of carnal painting. Furini was rediscovered at the start of the 20th century by Arturo Stanghellini. Her poorly documented career was sketched by Elena Toesca and brought to light with an exhibition of her drawings at the Uffizi Gallery, 1972. Very good condition. Sold with invoice & certificate.
