This fascinating portrait, depicting a gentleman and datable in the first half of the seventeenth century, is to be placed in the pictorial production of a Lombard portrait painter and precisely, based on stylistic characteristics, presumably active between Milan and Bergamo.

It portrays a man of high social background, whose identity is unknown, even if the relative social background is perceptible. He is dressed in a dark embroidered suit and a wide ruff, immortalized with his gaze directed towards the spectator and his body slightly in profile. The subject, seated while holding a letter in his hand and resting his hand on the arm of a rich high-chair in Renaissance style, an allusive decor to the affirmation of his noble status. To his right are numerous books stacked on the table, signifying his erudition and his profession, perhaps a lawyer, a notary or a man of letters.

The setting in which he is portrayed and the characters of the pose and face give him a sense of intimacy and authority together.

The painting has high pictorial qualities and the photographic observation of the face and the details reveals passages worthy of a master, who would certainly be worthy of further study concerning the attribution. Although little perceptible from the photos, the artist meticulously rendered the dark fabric of the dress, or the details of the face and still of the hands, the sharpness of the contours underlined by the light, the expressive power of the eyes. Finally, the painter's talent is evident in the fringe and golden details of the red velvet trunk.

The very limited chromatic scale, with the whites of the ticket, the cuffs and the ruff, the completely black dress that allows the evaluation of the fabric, on a sparse background where to create depth has been placed by the painter a green knotted cloth, illuminated by a light light, it fully expresses the truth, the intimacy of the subject's character, revealed by his gestures.

The work is presented with a very good state of conservation.
