It is a superb portrait of a young gentleman, of excellent quality, immortalized according to the classic three-quarter pose with the wide "perruque léonine", wig model in vogue at the time according to the fashion introduced by Louis XIV, and a red velvet cloak covering a rich robe, a white lace shirt knotted at the neck that emerges from a bodice with brocade embroidery motifs with gold thread.

As per the inscription on the back it would be Claude Mathias de La PORTE, knight and marquis of L'Artaudière, of which, however, no detailed biographical information is known.

Admiring the work, one can only be fascinated by the extraordinary elegance of the effigy. His intense gaze highlights a face of aristocratic beauty, the simple but extremely refined clothes denote the hand of a great portraitist.

Soft, full-bodied brush strokes with bright colors capture and excite the viewer, impressed above all by the accuracy of the details.

This painting, executed in the second half of the seventeenth century and precisely in 1696, is a typical example of the portraiture of Jean Guynier who, although less known than his colleagues active in Paris Nicolas de Largillière, Hyacinthe Rigaud or François de Troy, made a series of works of superb quality, developing his career in Grenoble, becoming the official painter of aristocrats and senior officials. He was also consul of the city of Grenoble under Louis XIV.

The portrait, in excellent conditions of conservation, is framed by a splendid ancient frame, in stucco and carved and gilded wood.

Accompanied by a certificate of photographic authenticity in accordance with the law (FIMA - CINOA).
