Object description :

"Necessary To Write"
Necessary to write. Portable model used by public writers under the Ottoman Empire. This object consists of an elongated compartment (slight depression under its base) closing with a hinged cover to transport the calames (a sort of reed cut into a point to receive the ink) and a side inkwell attached with a shaped cover scallop shell (symbol of protection, perhaps also that of a sultan in the history of the Ottoman Empire…). It is made in a cast bronze carved on all sides of stylized foliage decorations. (Copper used for the riveting and the hinges of the scallop shell). The traditional art of calligraphy justified that in any place and at any time "scholars" could practice it. These calligraphers also called copyists also transcribed administrative, religious or legal texts. For this all these manuscripts were accompanied by a writing desk called here: divit. Delivery: 10 € for mainland France.
