"Flemish School (antwerp) From The End Of The XVIth Century. Meditating Philosopher."
Oil on canvas Old molded and gilded frame Total dimensions: 102 x 87 cm Our table, executed at the very end of the 16th century, around 1590-1600, represents a meditating philosopher. Wearing a red cap and wearing a large blue coat, he sits on a large rattan armchair, his dog lying at his feet. The open kitchen door lets you see all kinds of everyday objects on shelves, and the cat has grabbed a spoonful of meat! But the big picture hanging on the back wall and representing Charon crossing the Styx on his boat loaded with souls towards hell is there to remind us of the brevity of life and especially the path that sinners will take. We know an engraving by Raphael I Sadeler (1560 / 61-1628 / 32) after a painting by Vos and having the same subject. Maarten de Vos (1532 - Antwerp - 1603) A native of Holland, Maarten de Vos was born in Antwerp to a painter father, Pieter de Vos, native of Leyden and registered with the Guild of Saint Luke in Antwerp in 1507. Benjamin of four as a child, Maarten was surely trained in his father's workshop. He also took part in a trip to Italy at the same time as Pieter Bruegel in 1552. Passing through Rome and then Venice, we know that he would have created background landscapes for the Tintoretto. It is through large orders from Antwerp brotherhoods that he creates monumental altarpieces for the Cathedral of Antwerp. Above all a painter of religious scenes, he is also a portrait painter and designer. First mannerist, his style evolves and becomes clear and descriptive, which corresponds perfectly to the ideas of the Counter-Reformation. Our painting is a fine example of Antwerp productions from the end of the 16th century. In a perfect state. Sold with invoice & certificate
