Jean-Baptiste Charpentier l'Ancien (1728, Paris - December 3, 1806, Paris) "The Happy Family oil on canvas Signed and dated below in the center Charpentier 1779 37 x 45.5 cm (size of the image) Charpentier est who became famous for his portraits of Marie-Antoinette and Louis Jean Marie de Bourbon, Duke of Penthièvre, whose family members he also represented. In his first works, he turned mainly to the representation of genre scenes, then later on portrait painting, and then paying homage to genre painting again in his later work. Charpentier was probably related to Jean Charpentier (? -1777), painter and gilder. The latter was one of the last directors of the Academy of Saint-Luc, Charpentier was first a member, then, from 1760, the same professor, who married Anne-Catherine Le Prince, daughter of the painter to King Jean-Baptiste Le Prince. closure of the Academy of Saint Luke he continues to exhibit at the Royal Academy Correspondence Fair and becomes a good friend of Jean-Baptiste Greuze. He exhibited there until 1785. When the French Revolution abolished academic privilege, he settled in the Salon du Louvre and exhibited there from 1791 to 1799. He also returned to his previous genre painting and created charming scenes from the lives of ordinary people like the current picture of the "happy family". Many of Charpentier's works are unsigned or are simply attributed to him. This table is one of the few to be signed and dated by him. A painting by Charpentier was auctioned for the last time at Christie's, Paris, May 3 and 4, 2016, n ° 11, for € 63,900. inv.no.5.001 13.500 €
