It is a pair of precious enamel plates painted in polychrome, with gold details, oval in shape on copper panels, depicting the two biblical episodes of the Last Supper, with blessing Jesus at the center of the composition surrounded by the Apostles arranged in a semicircle , and of the presentation of Jesus to the crowd of Pharisees after being scourged and crowned with the crown of thorns by order of Pilate.
The biblical theme, recurring in the documented Limoges production of Renaissance enamels, is re-proposed here with refined compositional and executive skill. In particular, our plaques reproduce the designs of Pierre Courteys (active in Limoges, 1520 - 1591), one of the best enamel painters of Limoges, an excellent draftsman and colorist active in the 16th century.
Note the miniatural meticulousness of the representation, and the evident quality with which this precious material has been applied on the slab, further embellished by the gold highlights that define some details.
The works are in excellent condition, accompanied by two beautiful gilded wooden frames.
