Object description :

"XVIIth Century Roman School: The Circumcision Of Ishmael On The Day Of Kippur"
XVIIth century Roman school: the circumcision of Ismaël Pen and brown ink, black stone and brown wash. 26 x 36 cm. This beautiful drawing in pen, removed, detailed in an architectural composition with double and strong vanishing lines which leave, up to the left and up to the right, from the Circumcision ewer in which the wine which will be kept then poured into the circumcision cup. The circular monument in the center escapes the vanishing lines in its symbolism which prefigures the Temple of Jerusalem, which tradition identifies with the place where Abraham was going to sacrifice Isaac. It is therefore a scene from the Old Testament, around the day of the Kippur during which "Abraham took Ishmael, his son, all those who were born in his house and all those whom he had bought with his money , all the males among the people of the house of Abraham; he circumcised them that very day, as God had told him. Abraham was 99 years old when he was circumcised. Ishmael, his son, was 13 years old - the age of the daat (conscience) - when he was circumcised. That very day Abraham was circumcised, along with Ishmael his son. Likewise, all the men in his house, born in his house or bought for money from strangers, were circumcised with him ”. (God's covenant with Abraham, Genesis 17.1-27) The same day that Abraham and Ishmael were circumcised (Genesis 17,23.26) was a day of Kippur. And according to the Old Testament, every year, on the day of Kippur, God considers the blood of the circumcision of Abraham and forgives all the faults, as it is said "and that day he will forgive you and you will purify ”(Lv 16,30) Beautiful frame in gilded wood
