"Abraham Van Diepenbeeck - Christ With Links - Oil On Panel - XVIIth"
Abraham Van Diepenbeeck (1596 - 1675)
CHRIST WITH LINKS

Artistic representation of Jesus, awaiting his torture.
The artist presents Christ to us in close-up, hands tied.
He has an athletic body: you can guess his muscles, especially at the torso. His two knees are bent. His pelvis is offset on his right.
This type of representation was introduced in the 16th century and is less frequent than the seated variant 'Christ with ties seated on the cold stone'.

The light highlights the figure of Jesus, standing out from a neutral background which accentuates the dramatic effect of the painting. We can perfectly perceive the rendering of the bruised body, the muscles of the torso, on the expression of the face which, plunged in an intense prayer, despite an apparent serenity, does not ignore the intense internal combat of the victim.
Very beautiful painting of the XVIIth

When young, Abraham van Diepenbeeck learned stained glass technique with his father, Jan Roelofszone van Diepenbeeck.
He follows classical studies and settles in Antwerp between 1621 and 1623. He realizes there some stained glass windows, in particular for the cathedral Saint-Jacques (the Works of mercy) and the church of the Dominicans (Life of Saint Paul).
In 1623, he became a pupil of Rubens.
In 1626 - 1627, he participated in the execution of the cartoons for the series of tapestries La Glorification de l'Eucharistie, commissioned by the Infanta Isabelle at the workshop of Rubens.
In 1636 Van Diepenbeek acquired citizenship of Antwerp. He was admitted to the Guild of St Luc in 1638 and became director of the academy in 1641.
After a trip to Italy, he began to make illustrations. Among these, there are 59 drawings engraved by Cornelis Bloemaert to illustrate the Tables of the Temple of the Muses of the Abbot of Marolles.
He also went to England during the reign of Charles I, where he painted portraits of the Duke of Newcastle and his family and illustrated a horse riding treaty.
Diepenbeeck is the author of the stained glass windows of the Carmelite convent of Boxmeer.
