Bembe people, Republic of Congo, 1940s / 1950s, superb female carved wooden statuette standing on a base holding an object in each hand. The face with expressive features is finely modeled. The eyes are set with white earthenware. The abdomen has ritual scarifications. This magico-religious statuette has an under-gluteal opening which was to accommodate the magic charge. This remarkable Bembe figure was collected in situ by a French engineer during the construction of the Congo Ocean railway line (CFCO). Bembe statuettes are among the most sought after by collectors.
