HAST or KHAST (Yakob Solomonovich) / Хаст (Я́ков Соломо́нович). [Signed pastel] Contemplation at dusk on the banks of the Neva. Dimensions (at sight): 433 x 257 mm + marie-louise + frame. Superb composition signed in the lower left margin of Yakov Solomonovich Hast. It depicts the banks of the Griboedov Canal of Saint Petersburg with the golden gleams of the sunset. A native portrait painter from Berdyansk in 1873, Yakov Solomonovich Khast, after graduating from the Odessa art school, left for France in 1892 and entered the National Academy of Fine Arts in Paris, where he then studied with the famous painter and sculptor Jean-Léon Gérôme. He was linked with Amedeo Modigliani, Claude Monet, Marc Chagall as well as other representatives of the École de Paris. In 1905, a personal exhibition of works by Yakov Khast was presented at the universal exhibition in Belgium. For the painting "Paris Servant", he won a gold medal and a grand prize. After 1914 he was forced to return to Berdyansk, where he lived until the start of the Second World War. Evacuated to Ufa, he spent the rest of his life there; never ceasing to continue painting.
