Dan Ty 'Bà, Vietnam, early 19th century.
Pearshaped lute with short neck.
Monoxyle bottom, neck and head.
Peghead decorated with a carved bat.
12 frets on the table. It was played with a large plectrum, nowadays the number of frets is more important and the musicians use more readily fingerpicks.
Ty 'bà is the Vietnamese version of the Chinese Pi pà, Dan being the prefix meaning string instrument in Vietnamese.
