In a city view with an almost evanescent taste, illuminated by the morning light, small figures populate this delightful painting, with an intimate but popular glimpse.
To ennoble the composition, giving it the character of whim without however detracting from the truth of the snapshot, there is the triumphal arch in ruins in the center, with a lively vivacity between the solemnity that this ancient monument with Venetian palaces with clothes hanging on the windows. The gaze flows onto the dome and bell tower of S.Marco, which can be seen in the distance, with a pleasant and well-balanced effect of depth.
It is a small but very pleasant painting, which fits fully into that pictorial trend that developed in the Veneto area in the late eighteenth century. In particular, it is the work of an artist gravitating around the circle of Francesco Guardi (Venice 1712-1793), the great Venetian Master, from whom he draws in full compositional structure, pictorial technique, as well as the clear and bright palette.
They are in fact to be traced in our whim affinity with many compositions of Guardi's repertoire, among these:
- Capriccio with ruined arch and stormy lagoon, Accademia Carrara Bergamo link
- Capriccio with ruined arch and town walls, Auction Lampertz Colonia, link
- Architectural fantasy with ruined Gothic arch, Pushkin Museum Moscow, link
The painting, perfectly restored and relined, is in excellent condition for conservation.
