The tiles produced in the city of Delft from the 17th century onwards are called Delft tiles. By extension, we also name all the tiles manufactured in the Netherlands, whether in Friesland, Utrecht, or Rotterdam, or even in the north of France, in Belgium, and in England. These tiles generally measure between 13 and 14 cm per side; they most often include 4 small corner patterns that surround a central element: landscape, flower, biblical scene, animal, etc. A set of tiles sometimes forms a table representing a landscape, a genre scene, a marine, or the portrait of a famous person. The first Dutch tiles were painted in polychromy in Antwerp, in the style of Italian majolica. It was during the seventeenth century, under the influence of blue and white porcelain from China thanks to the Dutch East India Company, that the tiles became predominantly blue and white. Many princely residences and patrician residences of Europe of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries still have walls and floors decorated with Delft tiles. The most remarkable ensembles visible today are the Nymphenburg Castle in Munich and the Menshikov Palace in Saint Petersburg. In France you can admire the bathroom of the Count of Toulouse at the Château de Rambouillet and the paving of the Château de Beauregard (Loir-et-Cher). The first construction that Louis XIV had built in Trianon was covered with Delft tiles: the Trianon of porcelain. The former King of Poland and Duke of Lorraine Stanislas had part of his castle in La Malgrange (near Nancy) adorned with Delft tiles. Unfortunately, this part of the castle has been destroyed. Some tiles have been preserved.
