"Very Large Horizontal Sundial N. Bion Paris"
Very beautiful dial of unusual size signed Nicolas Bion in Paris C 1680 The sundial is provided with a compass carrying on its bottom a central rosette and directions. The folding gnomon, with a bird-shaped index typical of the so-called Butterfield models. On the back of the plate is a list of the latitudes in degrees of twenty four European cities with a rosette in the center of the compass. The tongue serving as a resort is decorated with floral patterns - The usual size of the known dials of Bion is 7 cm by 6 cm, the measurement of this one is 9.5 cm X 8 cm. Nicolas Bion (1655 - Death in 1733) Similar instrument in smaller size at the Louvre and Science Museum in London
